The principal waste-water associated with mines and quarries are slurries of rock particles in water. For instance, the coal washing is a specialised operation that generates enormous volumes of fines and slurries stored in ponds that are an ecological and economical threat. Regulators urge the optimisation of processes that reduce fines and the level of coal particle waste (coal tailings) contained within the waste (slurry) that pollutes the environment. Historically it has been both economically and physically impossible to separate coal fines from other wash waste products such as ash.
